Hole saws: the most important principles

HSS hole saws are made from tough, shatter-proof, sturdy HSS bimetal. The saw teeth are made of high-quality M42 (Co8) material and connected to the body of the saw.

Hole saws are used to saw round cut-outs in aluminium, plastics, wood and soft non-ferrous metals.

At a glance – how you benefit from HSS hole saws from PFERD:

  • Chattering during sawing is prevented by the alternating tooth pitch.
  • Good concentricity.
  • Good chip removal.
  • The hole saw is conveniently centred and guided via the replaceable HSS pilot drill.
  • Hole saw arbor is supplied with an ejection spring for improved ejection of the sawn material.

Five tips to ensure optimum use of hole saws

1. The correct rotational speed

Always observe the recommended rotational speeds. When using shank extensions, the recommended hole saw rotational speeds must not be exceeded. There is a risk of accidents!

2. Correctly clamp the pilot drill

When being clamped in the hole saw arbor, the pilot drill should project at least 3 mm (1/8") over the teeth of the hole saw.

PFERD TOOLS offers a special quick-mounting system to ensure quick and easy use of HSS hole saws. After use, the hole saw and quick-mounting system can be separated by simply pressing a button.

3. Use cooling lubricant

When sawing metals, use a high-quality cutting oil if possible to prevent overheating as a result of friction. This will help the hole saw to run smoothly and extend the tool life.

Exception: when working on aluminium, use kerosene instead of cutting oil.

4. Prevent corrosion

Prevent corrosion by always carefully removing any particles produced during the machining process from the workpiece.

Clean the workpiece chemically or mechanically (etching/polishing, etc.), especially when working on stainless steel (INOX).

5. Prevent tooth breakage

Ensure that all teeth of the hole saw are applied evenly and avoid swinging movements during sawing to prevent tooth breakage.
