Mounted points: the most important principles

Whether it’s for machining geometries, chamfering or cleaning: mounted points can be used in a wide range of applications. Find out here which materials the PFERD TOOLS range is designed for and what you need to bear in mind when using mounted points.

Recommended rotational speed range

Conventional drives have a rotational speed range of up to 150,000 RPM. The range of PFERD TOOLS mounted points has been designed specifically with this in mind. To make it clear which rotational speed range is recommended for your mounted point, you will find it listed both in the product table in our Tool Manual and on the detailed product page in the PFERD TOOLS SHOP.

The correct rotational speed

An overview of the various cutting speeds for the different mounted points is available in the following download. For the event that you don’t have this overview to hand, simply save our rotational speed calculator as a favourite to ensure you always have the information you need.

Correctly clamping the mounted points

Strong centrifugal forces will already occur when working at the recommended rotational speeds. Improper use can lead to uneven running or cause the shank to bend. To prevent damage and hazards, the shank must be clamped at least 10 mm deep in the collet or tool mounting. If the shank is not clamped properly or is damaged, it could bend or even break and cause injury. Before use, always check it is securely fitted and check the concentricity.

Mounted points for a variety of applications

Mounted points for metal

  • If you need to work on metal, PFERD TOOLS offers many different versions of mounted points. When it comes to universal grinding work on steel and cast steel, such as when dressing weld seams on steel structures, the STEEL mounted points are a good option.
  • If you need to work on edges, the PFERD TOOLS range features special mounted points with the suffix EDGE.
  • And if you are grinding titanium materials, cobalt-based alloys and hardened components the PFERD TOOLS range again has what you need: the TOUGH version. This model guarantees maximum stock removal, even on the hardest of materials.
  • Efficient grinding of stainless steel is no problem with the INOX type mounted points.
  • If you want to remove burrs from aluminium and non-ferrous metals look no further than the ALU mounted points.

Mounted points for grey and nodular cast iron

  • When it comes to grinding grey and nodular cast iron the range of PFERD TOOLS mounted points includes different types of the CAST and CAST EDGE versions. These mounted points enable a high stock removal rate thanks to their coarse grit size.
  • The CAST version is exceptionally well suited for cleaning workpieces and for grinding out shrinkage holes.
  • Mounted points from the CAST EDGE range are particularly dimensionally stable and therefore ideal for use on edges for deburring and for grinding out sand contamination and metal contamination on grey and nodular cast iron.
  • The CAST STEEL range is particularly suitable for grinding work on cast steel . It is suitable for removing burrs on cast steel parts and for grinding intersections after separating risers.

Mounted points for rubber, wood and plastic

RUBBER mounted points

The RUBBER version is specifically designed for general use on soft materials such as rubber, plastic and wood. The fields of application include:

  • the removal of burrs on plastic injection-moulded parts
  • the trimming of rubber moulded parts and moulded parts made of polyurethane (PUR)
  • the grinding of wooden cores and wooden shapes in model construction workshops
  • the roughening of various adhesive joints (e.g. for repairs on conveyor belts and tyres).

Grinding work in hard-to-reach areas

Does this sound familiar – you want to grind a hard-to-reach area but don’t know how to reach it easily and safely with the mounted point? The PFERD TOOLS range provides the answer: extensions for drive spindles. They can be used to extend mounted points with a shank diameter of 3, 6 and 8 mm.

The extension is mounted in the collet of the tool drive (air grinder or electric grinder), or in the handpiece of the flexible shaft. In some applications, spindle extensions are a more economical alternative to customized products with long shanks.
